Leather Care Guide

The Comprehensive Handbook for Leather Care

We believe leather goods are meant to be cherished for a lifetime. From the moment each item is crafted to when it becomes part of your daily routine, proper leather care is essential to preserve its beauty and function.

This practical guide covers everything you need—from how to take care of leather daily to long-term storage, handling minor wear, and knowing when to seek professional help. Whether your piece is made from full grain leather, top grain leather, or genuine leather, these tips will help you maintain and protect your investment for years to come (more on the different types of leather).

Everyday Care

Maintaining your leather begins with small, intentional habits. These everyday care routines help prevent wear and preserve the integrity of the material:

● Avoid Overstuffing

Just like skin, leather can stretch over time. To preserve the original shape of your leather handbag, tote bag, or saddle bag, avoid overloading it. This helps prevent permanent bulges or deformations.

● Wipe Regularly

For items in frequent use, gently wipe your leather goods with a soft, dry cloth weekly to remove dust and surface debris. This is especially important for high-contact areas like handles, straps, or corners.

● Prevent Scratches

Avoid contact with abrasive surfaces, metal accessories, or embellished garments that may scratch the leather. Full grain leather, while durable, can still be marred by sharp objects.

● If It Gets Wet

Water can stain or warp leather. If your product gets wet, gently blot it with a soft, dry cloth. For structured bags like tote bags in leather, stuff them with paper (preferably newspaper, changed every 1–2 hours) to absorb internal moisture and help maintain shape.
Let it air dry naturally in a cool, shaded place. Avoid direct sunlight or artificial heat sources, as they may cause cracking. Once dry, apply a leather conditioner to replenish natural oils and prevent stiffness or cracking—especially useful if you’re treating scratches or weather damage.

Storage

Thoughtful storage plays a key role in prolonging the life of your leather goods, whether it’s a saddle bag in leather or a small pouch:

● Keep Out of Direct Sunlight

Sun exposure can fade and weaken leather fibers. Always store leather items in a shaded, dry environment.

● Use a Dust Bag

Store bags in breathable dust bags to avoid scratches and dust buildup. A clean white cotton pillowcase also works well. Avoid colored fabrics that could transfer dye onto the leather.

● Never Use Plastic

Plastic can trap moisture, leading to mildew or mold. Stick to breathable cotton or linen for safe storage.

● Keep Away From Heat

Leather is highly sensitive to heat. Don’t store bags near radiators, heaters, or in hot cars for extended periods, as this can cause drying and cracking.

● Allow It to Breathe

Leather is a natural, porous material—it needs ventilation. Place white tissue paper or paper balls inside your bags to help maintain shape and absorb humidity. Air your items every 3–6 months, especially if stored long-term.

Care by Product Type

While daily care and thoughtful storage will play a significant role in maintaining your favorite leather items, specific products may require different care techniques.

  • Empty your bag regularly to avoid permanent deformation.

  • If storing for a season, wrap metal hardware (zippers, buckles) in tissue paper to prevent imprints.

  • Always store flat—not hanging—to avoid stretching the handles.

  • If your bag includes cowhide (hair-on) leather, avoid friction or rough surfaces, as hair can wear off over time. Gently brush in the direction of the hair using a soft-bristled brush. Do not soak. For light cleaning, use a barely damp cloth followed by a dry one to blot gently. Keep the bag away from excessive humidity and store in a well-ventilated area.

  • In case of mold (due to excessive humidity), wipe gently with alcohol-free wipes or a diluted bleach solution (less than 100 ppm). Then apply leather oil to restore moisture and finish with ventilation.

Bombona pouches

  • Avoid overfilling. This preserves the structure and prevents leather deformation.
  • Store in interior compartments of larger bags to prevent scratches.

  • Clean corners regularly—these areas are prone to buildup from daily handling, creams, or sweat.

  • Apply leather conditioner for scratches as needed to restore softness and color.

Leather changes over time—this is part of its unique charm. Subtle variations in color, texture, and sheen develop as it ages. But if your leather product becomes severely damaged or you’re unsure how to treat it, it’s best to consult a trusted professional.

While our leather care guide offers solutions for most everyday concerns, professional restoration ensures that your beloved items receive the attention they need to continue looking their best.
