What is Werregue?
Werregue is a type of palm fiber that grows in the mangrove swamps of Colombia’s Chocó region. It’s known for its exceptional strength and flexibility, making it perfect for weaving baskets, bowls, and other decorative objects that are both beautiful and durable.
The process of creating Werregue art is deeply rooted in tradition. Wounaan men gather the palm from remote areas, while Wounaan women are the keepers of the weaving techniques passed down through generations.
First, they extract and dye the fibers using natural pigments from local plants, roots, and bark—creating a range of earthy and vibrant tones. Then, with painstaking precision, they weave intricate patterns by hand, transforming simple materials into powerful expressions of identity and storytelling.

Early Werregue designs featured bold black-and-white geometric motifs, inspired by the body-painting patterns used in Wounaan ceremonies. As dyeing techniques evolved, so did the artwork.
