Initially, it would make me smile thinking they were from our customers or fans. But soon, I realized it was yet another email trying to convince me to take Bomboná’s production overseas. These factories promise speed and cost-efficiency, and some of my friends even suggest that producing Bomboná in Asia could be the best option for the brand.
As a Colombian living abroad, I can understand the appeal of fast and low-cost production. But for me, the answer is clear—Bomboná is and always will be made in Colombia. Why? Reconnecting with My Roots: From Bogotá to the World
Seventeen years ago, I left Colombia to study abroad, leaving behind the challenges of living in Bogotá such as delinquency and the fear I felt around me since I was a kid when hearing adult talk about all the dangers of our city.
At the time, I couldn’t have imagined that my life would take the turn it did: I married a foreigner and began rediscovering the beauty of my homeland. Our trips to Colombia were eye-opening, especially when we noticed the exceptional quality of Colombian craftsmanship.
The leather goods we saw—luxurious yet uniquely Colombian—could rival the finest European brands. This inspired us to create Bomboná, a luxury brand that celebrates the artisanal traditions of Colombia. Since then, we’ve been committed to keeping our production in Colombia, honoring its history, craftsmanship, and unique identity.

During my visit to Nariño in 2021, I spoke with local artisans about their work. They shared the challenges they face—particularly the difficulty in finding younger generations willing to continue the artisanal craft. With the rise of technology and office jobs offering steady salaries, many young people see working as an artisan as too physically demanding and underappreciated. Sadly, the undervaluation of handcrafts means that factory-made goods can sometimes be sold for more than handmade leather.
