April 22nd, Earth day, is a day to celebrate and raise awareness about environmental issues and not only talk about the importance of sustainability, but also review and perhaps decide on new commitments.
At Bomboná Colombia we are committed to developing sustainable products and we will keep co-working with our artisans and material suppliers to find better and more sustainable ways of producing and creating amazing products which can represent Colombia and motivate everyone to discover more about the real Colombia.
In this post we want to share with you our current commitments to being a sustainable brand. We are learning every step of the way and if you have suggestions on how to improve and become more sustainable, we welcome you to contact us.
Slow Fashion
We want to reduce our environmental impact and be ambassadors of conscious consumption – buying less items and using more what we have and for a longer time. Therefore we are committed to:
- Only using high quality and durable materials so that our pieces can be used for a longer time.
- Creating timeless pieces that will not go out of style quickly and which can be used throughout the different seasons.
Sustainable Leather
We have chosen to only locally-source leather which is a by-product of the farming industry in Nariño, Colombia, the region where we produce our bags. Because Colombia has a beef tradition, we have decided to source our leather from small-scale, family-owned tanneries that get their leather from the farms of nearby municipalities.
We also only choose the best quality full-grain leather, which is the top, thicker and most durable layer of the hide, ensuring that the entire section or most of the leather can be used and reducing any waste.
Small Scale & Zero Waste Production
All of our pieces are handmade by Colombian artisans who strive to reduce waste by repurposing leather scraps for smaller bags. As our bags are 100% handmade, we only produce very small collections and purposely maintain a reduced stock.
Sustainable Packaging
We use sustainable packaging to reduce our environmental print. We intentionally do not use paper tags or plastic bags, we have designed our boxes to be able to be folded flat for ease of transportation and use vegetable-based printing inks for our box prints.
In this post we have shared with you our current commitments to be a sustainable and responsible brand. In the upcoming years we will keep working with our artisans and materials’ suppliers to find more ways to become more sustainable, for example by using plant-based tannins or recycled materials.
